Located at or near District Headquarters across Uganda.
  • Selected Sub-County Offices
Check with your local authorities to confirm NIRA service desks in your area.

What You Need to Replace Your Lost ID

To replace a lost national ID in Uganda, prepare the following documents:

  • Police Report or Case Reference (Mandatory)
Obtain this from the nearest police station confirming your ID loss.
  • Letter from LC1 Chairperson
A recommendation letter verifying your residence and identity.
  • Copy of Lost ID (if available)
Not required but helps in record retrieval.
  • Two Passport-Sized Photos
Some offices offer digital capture, but carry photos just in case.
  • National Identification Number (NIN)
If you remember your NIN, write it down—it speeds up the search.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

Step 1: File a Police Report

Visit your nearest police station to report the lost ID. You’ll receive a case reference number or a signed report.

Step 2: Collect Supporting Documents

Gather your LC1 letter, police report, NIN (if known), and passport photos.

Step 3: Visit the NIRA Office

Submit your application at any authorized NIRA office, preferably where you registered originally. You will be issued an acknowledgment slip after submission.

Step 4: Pay the Replacement Fee

  • Fee: UGX 50,000
  • Payment is made at the bank or through mobile money using a URA PRN (Payment Registration Number) generated on URA Portal

Step 5: Biometric Re-Capture

NIRA staff may re-capture your fingerprints and photo during submission, depending on the record status.

Step 6: Wait for Processing

  • Processing Time: Usually 4 to 6 weeks
  • You’ll receive an SMS or call when your card is ready.

Step 7: Collect Your New ID

Bring your acknowledgment slip and original documents used for submission to collect your new national ID from the same NIRA center.

Important Notes

  • Do not pay cash to individuals claiming to fast-track the process—use official payment channels only.
  • Always keep a copy of your police report and acknowledgment slip.
  • Use your NIN to access services while waiting for your new ID.
