How Colour Transforms Communities
Once a vibrant hub of craftsmanship, Katwe in Kampala was known for its innovators who repaired electronics and vehicles long before modern training centres existed. However, as years passed, poverty, crime, and neglect took over, turning this historic suburb into one of Uganda’s most challenged areas.
Today, that narrative is changing. Through the kARTwe project, a community-driven initiative led by Feed a Million Mouths International (FAMMI) and supported by Kansai Plascon Uganda, residents are restoring Katwe’s spirit using art and colour. The project transforms dull, crumbling walls into expressive murals that tell stories of hope, resilience, and unity.

These open-air art galleries celebrate the community’s culture and identity while demonstrating how colour can heal social divides. Each mural reflects the dreams and values of the people, giving residents a renewed sense of pride and ownership.
Building Capacity and Inspiring Change
Beyond aesthetics, the project aims to improve mental, physical, and emotional well-being through structured art training sessions. These creative workshops encourage environmental awareness, self-expression, and teamwork. Adults and children learn to transform discarded materials into art pieces, reinforcing lessons of recycling, sustainability, and collaboration.
To date, more than 200 residents — including 80 pupils from Katwe Central Primary School — have participated in these workshops. Over 30 murals have been completed, transforming once-neglected corners into vibrant landmarks. Residents now take active roles in keeping the streets clean and maintaining the newly painted walls.
Plascon’s Broader Vision
Kansai Plascon Uganda’s involvement mirrors its “Colours of Home” philosophy, which views colour as a catalyst for transformation and connection. The company believes that beauty and progress begin where people are and that creating nurturing environments helps foster emotional and cultural unity.
As part of the 14th edition of Plascon’s Paint and Win promotion, the brand is extending its community outreach. This year, it will support five health centres and five schools, strengthening its mission to make Ugandan communities feel like home.
Through art, colour, and collaboration, the once-forgotten walls of Katwe now tell a powerful story — one of revival, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of community.
