President Museveni Suspends Cabinet, Parliament for NRM Voter Register Exercise
Kampala, Uganda – May 5, 2025 – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has suspended cabinet meetings and parliamentary sessions to allow full government participation in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) voter register verification drive scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
In a directive issued Sunday, Museveni called on all NRM members to report to their local village centers by 10:00 am to take part in verifying their names in the party’s register and electing village-level Local Council I (LCI) flag bearers.
“I urge all NRM members to go to their local areas at 10:00 am to participate in verifying NRM registers and electing LCI flag-bearers,” the President stated.
The president emphasized that the verification exercise—coordinated by the NRM Electoral Commission—must be conducted between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. In light of the exercise, he announced that no cabinet meetings would be held on Monday, May 5, and confirmed Parliament Speaker Anita Among had agreed to suspend Tuesday plenary sessions.
Museveni will personally oversee the process in Rwakitura, Kiruhura District, while First Lady Janet Museveni will participate in Ireenga, Ntungamo. He added that, as party chairman, he would not endorse any particular candidate during the elections.
“I cannot and should not take sides. I welcome any choice our members make,” he clarified.
The suspension of top government business reflects the high priority the President places on grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2026 general elections, with many viewing it as a strategy to consolidate the NRM’s internal structures and voter base.
Analysts suggest the register update is key to removing ghost entries, strengthening village party units, and resolving local disputes—laying the groundwork for a smoother nomination and campaign process in the lead-up to 2026.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMKWICbbcvE
