Where To Stay In Kampala: An Insider’s Guide
Kampala may not be a large city by world standards, but navigating through it can be challenging due to heavy traffic. If you’re visiting for a specific event, such as a conference, business, or work, I recommend staying as close as possible to the venue. Even though Uber is convenient, you may find yourself sitting in traffic for over an hour just to cover a few kilometers.
Let’s break down the best areas to stay in Kampala:
Acacia Avenue
Acacia Avenue is one of Kampala’s most popular areas, especially among expats and tourists. It is home to one of the city’s most developed malls, and the area is generally safe and vibrant. If you’re visiting Kampala for the first time, this is an ideal spot for both comfort and convenience.
However, be mindful of the nightlife in the area. While it’s perfect for those looking to experience Kampala’s vibrant party scene, noise could be an issue depending on where you stay.

Stay at Bushpig Backpackers, a cozy hostel located on Acacia Avenue. It offers free wifi, private rooms, dorms, and even an on-site restaurant and bar. If you’re up for a party, this is the spot to meet other travelers. Plus, the hill provides great views of the city.
For the Luxury Seeker:
Stay at Four Points by Sheraton. Located further down Acacia Avenue, this hotel offers a peaceful environment, just a short walk from major attractions like Independence Park and the Uganda Golf Club. It has a gym, swimming pool, and on-site dining with a buffet breakfast.
Ntinda
Ntinda is an upscale area, slightly more affluent than Bukoto. It’s quieter but still has plenty of activities and restaurants. It’s home to Ntinda Mall, a big shopping complex popular with locals. You’ll find everything you need, including gyms, supermarkets, and eateries.
