Kampala, Uganda – March 28, 2025
Mastercard has officially opened its first office in Kampala, signaling a strong commitment to expanding financial inclusion and driving digital transformation across the country.
The new office, launched in early 2025, is part of Mastercard’s broader strategy to deepen its footprint in East Africa by working closely with government agencies, financial institutions, fintechs, and telecom providers to bring innovative digital payment solutions to underserved populations.
Powering Uganda’s Digital Future
Mastercard’s entry aligns with the Digital Uganda Vision, a government-led initiative to harness technology for national development. As part of this vision, Mastercard signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance to promote digital adoption, especially in areas of e-government and financial services.
“Uganda has incredible potential for digital transformation. By partnering with key stakeholders, we aim to create a connected and inclusive digital economy that benefits all Ugandans,” said a Mastercard representative during the launch event.
Airtel Money Global Pay: Uganda’s Gateway to the World
In partnership with Airtel Money Uganda, Mastercard rolled out the Airtel Money Global Pay Card—a virtual prepaid card designed to simplify international online payments for millions of Ugandans. Users can now shop globally, pay for educational services, stream content, or access e-commerce platforms directly from their Airtel mobile wallets.
The card is accessible via the MyAirtel App and allows users to manage spending in real-time while enjoying the security of Mastercard’s global network.
MoMo Virtual Card: Digital Access for MTN Users
Mastercard also teamed up with MTN Mobile Money Uganda, Diamond Trust Bank, and Network International to launch the MTN MoMo virtual card. This solution empowers users to make secure digital transactions worldwide, removing barriers for those without traditional banking access.
This move expands Uganda’s participation in the global digital marketplace, where access to online platforms was previously limited for many due to lack of payment options.
Why This Matters
With over 70% of Uganda’s population still operating outside the formal banking sector, these initiatives are game-changers. Mastercard’s innovations allow mobile users—many of whom are first-time digital finance participants—to seamlessly join the global economy.
Analysts say Uganda’s growing fintech landscape, mobile penetration, and youthful population create the ideal environment for rapid adoption of cashless systems.
Mastercard’s bold investment in Uganda marks a new era of inclusion, innovation, and empowerment. From enabling digital payments to supporting government digitization, the global payment giant is set to play a pivotal role in transforming how Ugandans access and use money in the digital age.
