Frustrations Emerge on Day One of Uganda’s National Voter Register Update

Several Ugandans expressed frustration on the first day of the nationwide voter register update as many designated parishes and wards were without the required voter registers.

In Makindye Division, a heated exchange ensued between a voter and Electoral Commission (EC) officials after he was informed to return next Wednesday.
“I traveled a long distance to resolve this, only to be told the voter register isn’t here and that I must come back,” lamented the voter, who chose to remain unnamed.

Similar incidents occurred in Makindye East, Rubaga, Nakawa, and Kawempe Divisions, where voters were told to return later. “The officials are uncertain about the registers’ availability; some say next week, others say Wednesday,” said Mr. Thomas Muntu, who was at Kabowa Church of Uganda Primary School. Despite his frustration, he vowed to comply with the directive.

At Kisalosalo Zone in Kyebando Parish, Kawempe Division, Secretary Ms. Masturah Nakisozi noted that local leaders had mobilized residents to check their names on the registers. However, many were disappointed to learn that only new voter registrations and relocations were being processed.
“We will revise our communication to avoid wasting residents’ time and money,” she said.

EC’s Justifications and Solutions

Kyebando Parish Election Officer Ms. Patricia Katushabe advised voters seeking to confirm their names in the register to return next week.
“The registers are not yet here, but I believe the EC will announce the display schedule soon,” she explained.

Meanwhile, EC spokesperson Mr. Julius Mucunguzi urged voters to utilize the online portal, which will be accessible starting the weekend.
“For areas lacking registers, the online platform is an alternative. While not everyone may access it, we are confident that missing materials will be distributed by the second or third day,” he reassured.

The voter register update, which is a crucial step ahead of the 2026 General Election, continues amid logistical hurdles, with the EC pledging to address these issues promptly.
