Hon. Herbert Okello Launches Easter Cup to Unite Agule County Through Sports and Youth Empowerment
Herbert Okello Easter Cup is more than just a football tournament—it’s a movement aimed at unity, youth empowerment, and community transformation in Uganda’s Agule County.
On Saturday, April 12, 2025, Hon. Herbert Okello, a parliamentary hopeful for Agule County, officially kicked off the Agule County Easter Cup at Agule Primary School grounds. The initiative brings together football teams from all six sub-counties—Chelekura, Boliso, Agule Town Council, Akisim, Kameke, and Agule Sub-county—in a spirited tournament that runs until Sunday, April 20 at the Murukokur playgrounds.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Okello emphasized that the event is not about politics, but about peacebuilding, showcasing talent, and strengthening community ties.
“This tournament is about unity and giving our youth a platform to shine. We’re investing in their potential to represent Agule beyond this county,” he told an energized crowd of players, fans, and local leaders.
Beyond the pitch, Okello has been actively improving local infrastructure—most notably by installing solar-powered streetlights in trading centers across Agule. “These lights are boosting security and helping small businesses operate into the night, which uplifts the local economy,” he said.
Each sub-county has fielded its own team, with zonal matches leading to a grand finale. Community members have welcomed the effort, praising Okello’s consistency in supporting youth causes even outside election cycles.
“Unlike many politicians who only show up with footballs during campaigns, Okello has been with us throughout,” said Julius Okim, team coordinator for Akisim Sub-county.
Morukokume’s LC1 chairperson Martin Achelem added a note of caution: “Let’s ensure discipline on and off the pitch. Respect match officials and keep the games peaceful.”
Meanwhile, younger voices like 18-year-old Albert Wamala are calling for greater inclusivity, urging Okello to consider organizing a tournament specifically for under-18 players. “We often get sidelined. I hope he remembers us when national youth tournaments like Uhuru come around,” Wamala said.
Organizers hint that the Easter Cup could become an annual fixture—aimed at discovering talent, nurturing peace, and promoting development in Agule County and beyond.
