Inclusivity in Education Takes Center Stage

The Minister for Education, Mrs. Janet Museveni, has announced the release of the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results, which highlight remarkable progress in inclusivity and participation in Uganda’s education system.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) reported a 25.5% increase in special needs candidates, with 3,328 learners sitting for the exams. This achievement demonstrates growing awareness and commitment to inclusive education.

Inclusivity also extended to prison facilities, where 108 inmates from Luzira and Mbarara Main Prisons participated in the exams. Many achieved Division 1 and Division 2 placements, showcasing the empowering potential of education for all individuals, regardless of circumstances.

Historic Retention Rates and Performance Trends

UNEB recorded the lowest absentee rate in five years at just 1.3%, a testament to improved student engagement and retention nationwide.

When analyzing gender-based performance, girls excelled in English, with 89.6% achieving a minimum pass, compared to 86.9% of boys. Conversely, boys outperformed girls in Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, highlighting subject-specific gaps that require targeted interventions.

Key Insights and Pathways Forward

The 2024 PLE results signify notable advancements in inclusivity and retention while identifying areas for improvement in subject-level proficiency. These outcomes mark a vital step in Uganda’s journey toward achieving an equitable and high-quality education system.
