How to File a URA Tax Return Online

March 12, 2026

Filing a URA Tax Return is a legal obligation for registered taxpayers in Uganda. The Uganda Revenue Authority provides an online system that allows individuals and businesses to file returns electronically. As a result, taxpayers can complete the entire process without visiting a URA office.

However, the process requires attention to detail. Each stage must be completed correctly to avoid validation errors or rejected submissions. The URA portal guides taxpayers through downloading a template, completing the form, and uploading the validated file for submission.

Below is a clear guide explaining how to complete your URA Tax Return using the URA e-services portal.

Accessing the URA Portal

First, open the Uganda Revenue Authority portal using your preferred web browser. Then navigate to the e-services section where tax services are available.

Next, select the login option. Enter your credentials to access your account.

Your login ID is your Tax Identification Number (TIN). After entering the TIN and password, proceed to the taxpayer dashboard.

Once logged in, you will see several services available through the URA portal.

Selecting the Return Filing Option

After logging in, go to the e-services menu. Under this section, select Return and then click File a Return.

The system will ask you to select the appropriate return type. At this stage, choose whether you are submitting a provisional income tax return or a final income tax return.

Selecting the correct return type is important. Therefore, confirm the appropriate option before proceeding.

Downloading the Return Template

Next, select the correct return period from the available options.

After choosing the period, download the return template provided by the URA portal.

Save the downloaded file on your computer in a convenient location. The template is provided as a Microsoft Excel file. Importantly, do not rename the file at this stage because the portal requires the original template name.

Completing the Return Template

Open the downloaded Excel template. When prompted, enable macros or content so that the form can function properly.

Then begin filling in the required information in the template. Provide the requested financial details and complete all declarations carefully.

Avoid cutting and pasting data into the sheet. Instead, enter the values directly into the appropriate cells.

As you fill in the form, the template automatically calculates the tax payable based on the information provided.

Validating the URA Tax Return

Once all required fields are completed, click the Validate button within the template.

The system will review the information and check for errors. If the template detects any issues, it will redirect you to an error page.

Correct the highlighted errors and validate the template again.

However, if the template passes validation successfully, you will see a prompt asking whether to save the template as an upload file.

Saving the Upload File

When prompted, click Yes to save the validated template as an upload file.

Save the file in a location that you can easily access later.

At this stage, do not rename the upload file. Keeping the original name ensures the URA portal recognizes the file during the upload process.

Uploading and Submitting the Return

Return to the URA portal page where you downloaded the return template.

Next, upload the saved upload file using the upload option on the portal.

After uploading the file, click Submit to complete the URA Tax Return filing process.

Receiving the Acknowledgement Receipt

Once submission is successful, the URA system generates an acknowledgement receipt.

You can print this receipt immediately for your records. In addition, the portal automatically sends a copy of the acknowledgement to the email address registered on your taxpayer account.

Therefore, always confirm that your email address on the URA portal is correct before filing your return.

Completing your URA Tax Return through the portal ensures compliance with Uganda’s tax regulations. Moreover, following each step carefully helps prevent errors, delays, or rejected submissions.
