Coca-Cola Uganda Boosts Water Efficiency at Rwenzori and Namanve Plants

April 22, 2025

Coca-Cola Uganda water efficiency efforts have intensified with new measures to cut water usage at its Rwenzori and Namanve facilities. These upgrades are part of the company’s broader push for sustainable manufacturing.

Muminu Kirunda, Manufacturing Development Specialist at Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda (CCBU), emphasized the importance of water to both operations and communities.

“Water is essential to life, our beverages, and the communities we serve,” said Kirunda. “We aim to promote water stewardship within our business to increase efficiency and return safe water to communities.”

CCBU, part of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), is leveraging data to track and reduce water usage. The team monitors bottle-cleaning performance by the hour and conducts daily reviews to evaluate operations and identify areas for improvement.

Beyond technical monitoring, the company has launched internal awareness campaigns and appointed plant-based water champions to encourage best practices. This reinforces a culture of responsibility and positions water conservation as a top priority.

“By closely tracking our water use, we work to ensure every drop counts,” Kirunda added.

These local efforts align with a continental initiative launched in September 2024. The Coca-Cola Company, CCBA, Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and Coca-Cola HBC committed nearly $25 million to water-related projects across 20 African countries.

The Global Water Challenge (GWC) will lead this long-term initiative, working with partners such as The Nature Conservancy (TNC), IUCN, and WWF. The project runs from 2024 to 2030 and aims to tackle water stress, protect resources, and improve community resilience.

Coca-Cola Uganda’s ongoing commitment reflects the company’s global push to become a leader in water stewardship—ensuring sustainable access for both operations and the people they serve.
