The government has charged Dr. Kizza Besigye and activist Samuel Lubega Mukaaku for their alleged unlawful protest in 2023 against skyrocketing commodity prices.
Dr. Besigye, a prominent opposition figure, appeared before Buganda Road Court to respond to accusations of inciting violence. The charges relate to a 2022 demonstration in Kampala, where he criticized the government’s handling of the rising cost of living.
Known for his activism, Dr. Besigye has repeatedly called on authorities to address Uganda’s worsening economic conditions.
Earlier, the court session scheduled for January 9 was delayed because Dr. Besigye, currently in Luzira Prison on unrelated charges brought by the General Court Martial, was not produced in court.
Defence lawyer Erias Lukwago and the prosecution clashed over responsibility for ensuring his presence in court. Lukwago insisted the onus was on the prosecution to facilitate his appearance.
