Uganda’s Simon Kaheru, Oscar Kamukama, Bruce Mpamizo, and Kenneth Ayebare Elected as EABC Directors: Driving Regional Economic Integration

Uganda has cemented its influence in the East African Business Council (EABC) with the election of four prominent business leaders—Simon Kaheru, Oscar Kamukama, Bruce Mpamizo, and Kenneth Ayebare—to pivotal roles during the 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM). Held on December 13, 2024, in Arusha, Tanzania, the AGM showcased Uganda’s dedication to fostering regional economic integration and advancing private-sector interests within the East African Community (EAC).

Simon Kaheru of the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) will serve as Vice Chairperson, further bolstering Uganda’s representation in the EABC. Joining him are Oscar Kamukama from Steel and Tube Industries, Kenneth Ayebare of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), and Bruce Mpamizo from Movit Products Limited. These leaders will represent Uganda on the newly established Governing Council and Executive Committee, entrusted with shaping the EABC’s strategic vision.

Paving the Way for Regional Growth

The election of these individuals signals a new era for the EABC as it strengthens its mission of eliminating trade barriers, promoting cross-border investments, and fostering private-sector-led economic development. Their leadership comes at a time when regional economic integration is critical for addressing pressing challenges and unlocking opportunities within the EAC.

Simon Kaheru’s appointment as Vice Chairperson highlights Uganda’s proactive approach to advancing industrial and manufacturing interests across East Africa. Similarly, Bruce Mpamizo’s expertise in the FMCG sector, alongside Oscar Kamukama’s contributions to steel and manufacturing, and Kenneth Ayebare’s leadership in private-sector development, collectively bring a wealth of experience to the EABC.

A Diverse and Influential Governing Council

Uganda’s delegation will work alongside other newly elected leaders from across the EAC. Hon. Olivier Suguru from Burundi will also serve as Vice Chairperson, while Jas Bedi from Kenya, Dennis Karera from Rwanda, and Angelina Ngalula from Tanzania join the council.

The Governing Council includes notable figures such as Rajan Shah, former Chairperson of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), and Clifford Machoka, Senior Director for Public Affairs at Coca-Cola East and Central Africa. From Rwanda, the council features Linda Kalimba Mulenga of Trinity Lawyers and Emmanuel Nkusi of Bank of Kigali, while Tanzania is represented by Ashish Mistry from ALAF Group and Satbir Singh of Hanspaul Group of Companies. South Sudan, the newest EAC member, is ably represented by Kennedy Lodiong Kenyi of the Association of South Sudan Manufacturers and Mou Ambrose Thiik from Trinity Group.

Key Achievements and Future Goals

The AGM reviewed the EABC’s significant accomplishments during 2023/24, including the reduction of non-tariff barriers and initiatives to promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs). These achievements have set the stage for the council’s 2024–2026 agenda, which aims to accelerate regional integration and enhance private-sector participation in the EAC economy.

One notable development during the meeting was the amendment of the Memorandum and Articles of Association (MEMARTs), resulting in the creation of the Governing Council. This structural adjustment is expected to improve decision-making processes and enhance the council’s overall efficiency.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Frank Mbando, representing Hon. Paul Makonda, Regional Commissioner of Arusha, commended the EABC for its vital role in driving regional economic growth. He encouraged business leaders to invest in Arusha’s edible oil and textile industries, highlighting opportunities presented by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027), co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

A Unified Vision for Economic Prosperity

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairperson, Mr. John Lual Akol Akol of South Sudan, pledged to uphold the EABC’s mission of creating a borderless East Africa. He emphasized the council’s commitment to removing trade barriers and advancing a unified regional market. “The EABC remains committed to fostering a conducive business environment for all,” Akol stated.

Mr. Adrian Njau, Secretary to the EABC Board, reiterated the council’s dedication to regional collaboration, stating, “With the new leadership, we are poised to accelerate integration and create opportunities for private-sector growth.”

A Call for Private-Sector Collaboration

The 23rd AGM concluded with a renewed commitment to fostering collaboration among member states. Uganda’s strong representation in the EABC positions the country as a key driver of regional trade, investment, and economic prosperity. With an emphasis on eliminating trade barriers, promoting investment, and supporting SMEs, the new leadership is set to make significant strides in advancing the East African Community’s economic agenda.

As the EABC enters a new chapter, the elected leaders carry the hopes of businesses across the region, united in their vision of a vibrant, interconnected East African economy. Uganda’s contributions to this vision underscore its pivotal role in shaping the future of trade and investment in the region.
