Bank of Baroda Uganda is one of the leading international banks in the country, with a long history of service and innovation in the financial sector.
The bank first entered the Ugandan market in 1953 as an overseas branch of Bank of Baroda, India, one of Asia’s foremost financial institutions with more than 2,750 branches across 17 countries. In 1969, Bank of Baroda Uganda was incorporated as a separate entity. Following incorporation, the Government of Uganda acquired a 49% shareholding, leaving Bank of Baroda, India with a controlling 51% stake.
On 14 November 2002, Bank of Baroda Uganda made history by becoming the first financial institution to list its shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE). Its initial public offering (IPO) of September 2002 was highly successful, oversubscribed by 16.7%. Upon listing, the share price rose from UGX 600 to UGX 715 per share, a 20% increase on the first day of trading.
As of the listing, 15,000,000,000 shares were issued, giving the bank a market capitalization of UGX 630 billion. Its securities carry the ISIN code UG0000000055.
By 2001, Bank of Baroda Uganda had already established itself as the sixth-largest bank in Uganda. Its product portfolio included:
