Airtel Uganda was incorporated in Uganda on 17 July 1992, under registration number 80010000251875, as a private limited liability company under the Companies Act. It is domiciled in Uganda, with its registered office and headquarters located at Plot 16A Clement Hill Road, Nakasero, and postal address P.O. Box 6771, Kampala, Uganda.
On 22 May 2023, shareholders passed a special resolution authorizing the re-registration of the company as a public entity. Subsequently, on 23 June 2023, Airtel Uganda was re-registered as a Public Company Limited by Shares, retaining its original registration number.
The company’s principal objectives, outlined in its amended memorandum of association, include the operation of a cellular telephone network and the provision of telecommunication services under a National Telecommunication Operator (NTO) Licence granted by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Its services include:
- GSM mobile cellular services (voice, SMS, and data)
- National and international long-distance services
- Internet and data communications
- Value-added services enhancing customer experience
Airtel Uganda launched commercial operations in 1995 and has since grown into the second-largest mobile operator in Uganda by active subscribers.
The company is a subsidiary of Airtel Africa, whose ultimate parent company is Bharti Airtel. Airtel Africa operates in 14 African countries and ranks as the second-largest telecom operator in Africa. Globally, Bharti Airtel operates across 17 countries in Africa and Asia, positioning itself as the second-largest telecommunications operator worldwide.
Airtel Uganda achieved a historic milestone on 7 November 2023, when it was listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE). This listing made Airtel Uganda the second telecommunications company to be listed on Uganda’s main stock market, reinforcing its role as a leader in the country’s telecom sector.
Today, Airtel Uganda remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s digital and communication infrastructure, providing millions of subscribers with affordable and reliable connectivity, while contributing to the growth of Uganda’s telecommunications industry.
